Networking discussion: “Vietnam’s economy on its way of integration”

At the invitation of Mr. Vu Duc Dam, Chairman of Quang Ninh People’s Committee, the Club’s members have an opportunity to visit Ha Long, one of the most wonderful destinations in Vietnam. At Ha Long Pearl Hotel, the meeting, as usual, began with a remark by Mr. Le Thanh Tam, highlighting Club’s activities in Ho Chi Minh City, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An and Ninh Binh Provinces for the past two months. Cordial invitations to the Club meeting in this September, a special event along with the 5th CIO Conference and Awards in Hanoi, were also delivered to all attended guests and members.

In his talk, Mr. Vu Duc Dam made a short overview of the IT development situation of Quang Ninh Province, its obstacles that he and Quang Ninh Citizens have been facing so far and also his deep love for this land since his appointment. Mr. Vu expressed his wish to call for more investment in and attention to Quang Ninh, a prospective area of the North, and to improve the IT application index here.

Following the program is the discussion on “Vietnam’s economy on its ways of integration” with the presence of Mr. Vu Duc Dam, Mr Hoang Van Dung and Mr. Tran Si Chuong. With his rich experience as the Standing Vice Chairman of VCCI and APEC Business Advisory Council Chairman in 2006, Mr. Hoang shared his views on the mutual relationship between Vietnam and APEC, stating issues related to finance, investment, IT, human resource development, Doha Negotiation Round, cost reduction for Vietnamese Enterprises, and Vietnamese SMEs system development solutions. In addition, Mr. Tran Si Chuong, an economics and investment consultant specialist with 20 years of international experience, mentioned risks in an economy and its relationship with the global ones. His talk emphasized two main points, namely the still low competitiveness of Vietnam’s economy after 20 years of renovation and emerging issues in the banking and finance system of the country. The importance of state administration, determination of potential risks and orientation towards sustainable development of the system was meanwhile pointed out.

After the discussion, 7 new members who were admitted included Mr. Vu Duc Dam, Mr. Hoang Van Dzung, Mr. Nguyen Minh Hong, Ms. Tong Kim Xuan, Ms. Hoang Thi Bich Ngoc, Mr. Pham Quan and Mr. Nguyen Xuan Hieu. Club members also expressed sincere thanks to Viettel Corporation and IT Pro Global as Club’s partners in August.

The meeting was ended in a warm networking dinner. Furthermore, members and guests were invited to visit Ha Long Bay the next morning by Quang Ninh People's Committee and Viettel Corporation. For an alternative choice, attendees could join the Golf Outing at Chi Linh Golf Club.

July meeting 2008 welcomed the presence of guests of honor: Mr. Luong Van Tu, Head of Vietnamese Government’s Negotiation Board on WTO accession and Mr. Patrick J. McGovern, Founder & Chairman of IDG. This time, the Club’s members and guests gathered at Sofitel Plaza Saigon Hotel and discussed “negotiation skills – both internationally and locally”.

Thanks to such an interesting theme and the presence of our negotiation masters, the meeting received more attendees than invited. As usual, the cocktail reception served with fine red wine brought people to warmly talks and ambience before the meeting started.

Following the usual ICT event review was the welcoming remark and summary of the Club’s June meeting in the U.S by Founder and Chairman of the Club, Mr. Le Thanh Tam. After that was the member admittance ceremony, in which new members were cordially introduced and given trophies and PINs and special gifts by the Club’s founders.

Joining the discussion panel on “International discussion” were Mr. and Mrs. Lore Harp McGovern, Mr. Luong Van Tu, Mr. Mike Asao, and Moderator Huy Nguyen. This time, Mr. Luong Van Tu shared with members the difficulties and challenges during negotiation, especially WTO accession process, in which Vietnam delegation knew how tough the negotiation with the U.S was. Regarding this topic, Mrs. McGovern talked about her experiences. In her opinion, one would succeeded in negotiating when he understood his partners, knew who he was and what he needed. Member really felt interested in this discussion.

Having finished the discussion, our members and guests were invited to banquet with VIP guests of The 13th Vietnam Computer Electronics World Expo / Vietnam ICT Outlook, especially H.E Nguyen Thien Nhan – Deputy Prime Minister of Vietnam.

U.S TRIP “Investment Opportunities for Technology & Communications to Vietnam”

From June 20-29, 2008, the CEO&CIO CLUB led a delegation of IT business executives and Vietnamese Government officials coming to the United States. On this occasion, the Club had the honor of being the Organizer of "Investment Opportunities for Technology & Communications in Vietnam" workshop from 23 -24 in San Francisco. The event was co-organized with Hoa Lac Hi-tech Park and the Vietnam Consulate General to the United States, SFO. Regarding the topic "Bridging the World through Technology, Next Generation Data Centers, the discussions were conducted through presentations from well-known speakers from Cisco IBSG, Stanford University and the U.S Department of Commerce on burning topics such as opening-up of Vietnam to Technology Investments, How U.S and Vietnamese companies can benefit from new opportunities, doing business in Vietnam, investment opportunities for Overseas Vietnamese and US businesses.

Besides, the Club organized visits to Google and Oracle headquarters, Cisco Executive Briefing Center and ntel Museum. At here, the delegation was welcome to Executive Lunch in Redwood, CA hosted by Oracle and Executive Dinner in San Jose hosted by Cisco on same day. The delegation also had opportunities to have talks and panel discussions with managers and staff from world IT leading corporations in the World. The next day, Club members went sightseeing of numerous famous places in Washington D.C, San Francisco and New York during this visit: UN Building, Wall Street, the Statue of Liberty, and the White House. This trip certainly provided a great experience of America , not only to the club members but also their family and relatives.

Ho Chi Minh City, May 14th. CEO & CIO club's May meeting was held at the grand hotel of Park Hyatt on ocassion of the Vietnam Trademark Day, hence the topic: "Brand – Vietnam Value – Global Outreach". This time the Club was joined by several guests from the government, such as Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong, vice chairwoman of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, as well as leaders of big-name brands in Vietnam, such as Biti's, Thai Tuan garment & textile, Pho 24, Saigon Jewelry Company, and Truong Thanh Wooden Craft Corporation. Trade Promotion Centers of various The topic focuses on four main points: How good we (Vietnamese brand) are right now, standards to evaluate a brand, How to sustainably improve Vietnamese brands, and how to promote Vietnamese Brand in the international market. Discussions took place in a warm and open atmosphere, with constructive opinions regarding various aspects of the topic. And as a tradition to the Club's meeting, the keynote this time was delivered to the audience by an executive in the field of IT, Mr. Leroy Liu, Sales Director of the Indochina department, AsusTek Computer Incorporated. The meeting ended with the usual luxurious banquet in the hotel.

Prior to the May 14th meeting, the Club held a golf event at Thu Duc golf course for executives of medium and small enterprises to have an opportunity to meet and exchange ideas before the IT Conference and Exhibition took place the following day.

At the beginning of April 2008, CEO&CIO Club’s members traveled to the neighboring country of Cambodia for their monthly meeting. This meeting was held in line with the Cambodia ICT and Telecommunication World Expo which lasted from April 4 – 6 in Phnom Penh. The Expo was a chance for CIO members of the Club to survey the international market in general and the Indochinese markets in particular.

On April 3, the Club’s members spent the whole morning to play golf at the beautiful Cambodia Golf Country Club. The monthly meeting’s banquet was held at the evening of the same day with presence of honor guests from both Vietnam and Cambodia’s governments and business community. The Russian Ambassador to Cambodia and his spouse also came to the banquet. The banquet served about 80 guests, some from very far countries as France and Canada.

The ICT Expo was opened the next day with presence of H.E Sok An, Deputy Prime Minister of the Royal Government of Cambodia.

HANOI - On March 13, CEO&CIO Club held its 12th meeting at Sofitel Metropole Hanoi Hotel in cooperation with computer supplier Lenovo Group Limited. Lenovo's President and CEO Mr. William J. Amelio, on his traveling to Vietnam, has attended the meeting as its Guest of Honor to share his technical ideas to the meeting's audience.

For the Club's networking discussion, Vietnamese Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Mr. Cao Duc Phat and Mr. Mai Liem Truc - Former Vice Minister of Science & Technology were invited to the meeting to give his experience in sustainable developing the country's agriculture as well as how to apply ICT in agriculture effectively. The event has attracted more than 70 participants including the Club's honored guests, standing members and those who're interested in CEO&CIO Club’s activities. It ended up with a networking dinner reception which all members felt free to exchange their concerns in such a warm and close atmosphere.

CEO & CIO Club’s Spring Cocktail Reception to cheer for the New Year was successfully held both in Hanoi and HCMC in connection with Cisco Systems Vietnam’s exhibition entitled “Vietnam Connected Real Estate Summit 2008”.

The summit which has been inspired by Cisco’s dream of a connected city where all dwellers can be linked by its network products has attracted a lot of government officials or businessmen in real estate and IT industry.

1. Reception: Members met again after long Lunar New Year’s holidays, their talks and cheers seemed warmer and more excited. Five star Daewoo’s authentic cocktail service backed them.

2. Meeting: As usual, Club’s President Le Thanh Tam spent first fifteen minutes to review ICT news and events of the month and to greet his members a happy new year. After the review, Cisco’s CTO Mr. Phan Thanh Son could not wait any longer to present his technical dream of connected real estate world. The presentation really impressed the audience. Mr. Nguyen Tran Nam, Vice Minister of Construction who was specially invited to the meeting has shared his interesting ideas on the matter. At the end of the meeting, visitors were invited to Cisco’s network exhibition next door to see how Mr. Phan Thanh Son’s dream may be realized.

IBM’s Presentation: The Changing IT Ecosystem

OVERVIEW

CEO&CIO Club’s First Anniversary Celebration was held at Intercontinental Hotel, 1A Nghi Tam Village, Tay Ho district, Hanoi. The Hotel has just been completed and put into operation. Wearing an elegant design combining oriental grace and western fineness, Intercontinental Hotel was the right choice for such an important event.

1. Cocktail Reception

Honored guests and members were welcomed at the lobby of the new hotel’s meeting centre. Argentinean fine red wine was served to warm up talks before the celebrating ceremony started. A lot of photos were taken for guests and members with technical assistance from Canon Vietnam.

The lobby was so impressively arranged with some of the best works by the local renowned photographer Thai Phien who had made a career in nude photography and recently published a nude collection titled Springtime. Mr. Thai Phien was invited to the celebration to give his autography in copies of his collection for the attendees.

2. The Ceremony

The celebration began with a short but informative video clip reviewing the Club’s one year in operation and confirming its target of developing a better connection in IT and ICT community.

After the clip, the Club’s 1st President Le Thanh Tam took the stage to deliver a full and profound report. His sliding presentation gave audience all details of the Club in 2007, its ten meetings, social activities and other facts and figures.

Recognizing the effective and useful existence of the Club, invited Governmental officials Mr. Do Trung Ta - former Minister of Post and Telecommunication, Mr. Nguyen Minh Hong - Assistant Minister of Post and Telecommunication, Mr. Thang Van Phuc - Assistant Minister of Home Affairs have delivered favorable words to confirm that the Club had followed the right way to bring in much benefit to its members and the society. They all hoped the Club would develop to support better the national IT and ICT industry in the future.

US-based IT giant IBM’s Senior Vice President Steve Mills was then invited to the stage to share his meticulous survey and research of The Changing IT Ecosystem. His interesting presentation was followed by the Club’s membership admittance from which five honored guests has turned to be honored members.

Mr. Truong Gia Binh, CEO from FPT Corporation was late for the ceremony but was then happy to occupy the stage and expressed his heartfelt words for the Club where he had found a good playground for himself and his friends. Mr. Binh also promised to further support the Club in 2008. His short address closed the ceremony.

At the banquet, the attendees were feasted to cheer for the Club’s one-year achievements. Special Intercontinental dinner was served with a menu of highlighted cuisines.

3. Classical Concert

After the impressive banquet, audience’s attention was attracted again to the stage where talented violinist Bui Cong Duy and his Hanoi Philharmonic Orchestra started to play great works composed by the music legends Mozart, Vivaldi, Kreisler and Johann Strauss. (concert program and photos)

The classical music concert has put a melodic end to the CEO & CIO Club’s very successful first anniversary celebration.
